An acute or sudden eye problem can be distressing and it can be difficult to know who to contact about it.
The Welsh Assembly Government recognised that optometrists (ophthalmic opticians) are well placed within the community to carry out a special type of eye examination for a patient who may need to be seen urgently.
This special eye examination is called the Primary Eyecare Acute Referral Scheme or PEARS for short. PEARS eye examinations aim to find out, as quickly and effectively as possible, if an eye problem needs special care or not.
Because of PEARS, any member of the public can visit a PEARS registered optometrist if they have an acute eye problem that needs to be looked at urgently, free of charge.
